Make Sure You Have At Least One Friend In Each Of These Categories

By Deidre Heid

I find it baffling to think about how many perfectly God orchestrated scenarios had to take place in order for me to end up meeting and getting to know all the people who consist of my tribe. I couldn’t imagine any of them not being a part of my world because they each serve a unique purpose in my life. I’ve come to the realization that there are different types of friends and I am convinced you need at least one in each of the following categories.

#4. The Carefree Friend

This is the person who never fails to make you laugh until your stomach hurts, get drunk on a weeknight, and help you forget any real problems that might be currently stressing you out. Their live-in-the-moment, carefree personality makes it impossible to be in a bad mood when they are around. This friend can be serious at times of course, but for the most part, they are there when you need a stress-free, entertaining night out to escape from an otherwise unavoidable reality.

#3. The Friend From A Distance

They might not be in your everyday life and conversations, but you still know you can always count on this person. Whether they live across town or across the country, you know that y’all will always be able to pick right back up where you left off. You occasionally check in on each other and make dinner plans every other month or so, but mostly stay up to date on each other’s lives through social media. You always make sure to like all their photos on Instagram so they know you haven’t forgotten about them.

#2. The Sensible Friend

We all need someone we can forever count on for an unbiased, realistic viewpoint when we ask for advice. This is the friend who somehow seems to know exactly what to say without being too harsh and for some reason always seems to be right. It’s the person you would get coffee with and share a sensible conversation. You respect their opinion and their ability to always be a listening ear. You trust what they have to say more than almost anyone else.

#1. The All-of-the-Above Friend

Last but not least, you have to have one person who is somehow the superhero friend, holding all of the above titles. You can fight with her like your sister and share your honest opinion because you know you’ll never stay mad at each other for very long. This is the person who drops everything and comes over to spend the night when you’re crying from a broken heart. People recognize her from your social media photos and vice versa. You have a secret language with emojis that only the two of you understand. This is the person you literally can’t live life without so you assume God will just ensure y’all die on the same day. Even if you have a weird season with life changes, you’ll never be able to replace this friend, even if you tried, because she was put in your life to stay there for an eternity. No boyfriend or job or dream is ever more important and they know that. If you haven’t found an All-of-the-Above friend yet, it’s okay. But when you do, you’ll realize it gives you a feeling similar to coming home after a long day of work. It’s safe, comfortable and the one place you never have to wear makeup.

Make sure to embrace each friend for who they are and what they bring to your life. And don’t forget to thank them for their undeniable friendship.
