You’re Just A Cheap Southwest Flight Away From These 5 Epic Experiences

By Deidre Heid

Anyone who knows me knows we are big Southwest Airlines fans over here. It’s mainly because we scored our companion pass in 2020 and haven’t looked back since! (If you don’t know what a companion pass is- once you reach a certain number of Southwest points each year you can make someone your companion and they travel for free anytime you book a flight)

I have learned that a lot of people don’t realize how many places Southwest actually goes. No, you cannot get to Europe but it’s not just a budget domestic airline. Some of my best (and most affordable) experiences have come from booking a Southwest flight.

You’re just a cheap Southwest flight away from these five epic experiences:

1. Soaking in hot springs in Costa Rica

Southwest has two different Costa Rica options- San Jose and Liberia. The Arenal area (where all the epic hot springs are) happens to be a 3 hour drive from either airport, so depending on where else in Costa Rica you plan to visit, you could fly into either one. We got a day pass to The Springs Resort & Spa and it was truly one of my most favorite days of vacation ever! Fun fact: They recently filmed the finale of The Golden Bachelor there!

2. Cliff jumping in Jamaica

This past March we realized we both had the same five days off so I asked Jordan, “Hey, wanna go to Jamaica this weekend?” and then we booked flights and made it official! We flew into Montego Bay and got a driver to take us an hour and a half to Negril. They are known for their epic cliffside hotels and restaurants and also the famous Seven Mile Beach. The best place we found for cliff jumping was Rick’s Cafe and Jordan wasted no time jumping off their cliffs into the bright blue refreshing water! (I skipped this activity because, my hair. lol)

3. Exploring a ghost town in Montana

I’m not sure if you heard but Southwest now flies into Bozeman, making all of my out west dreams come true. Two of my favorite states ever are Montana and Wyoming, both of which are close enough to the Bozeman airport. Virginia City is an old (almost) abandoned town that makes you truly feel like you’re going back in time to the wild wild west. They do have a couple different shops that are open and one really cool old saloon (Pioneer Bar) but for the most part you’ll feel like you’re in an abandoned old western ghost town!

4. Whale watching in Cabo

I visited Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on a girls trip last January not knowing we were going during prime whale watching season. We left the resort one day to do a private boat excursion and experienced a ginormous whale jumping out of the water right next to our boat. Four girls squealing after several margaritas was probably quite the sound! And no one even wanted to get a whale tale tattoo with me after this (rude!) My friend Taylor happened to catch it on film. You can see it on Instagram in my recent reel.

5. Snowmobiling up a mountain in Idaho

After Montana and Wyoming, my heart belongs to Idaho. This is the most underrated state in the US if you ask me. We did a snowy trip here in January 2021 after I found out from some intense research that they have epic hot springs, a luxury mountain resort town and unbelievable snowmobiling. We flew into Boise, rented a car and hit the road. I can’t wait to go back and experience this amazing state in the summer!

So there you have it- five epic adventures you can plan now that start with one little Southwest Airlines flight! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about any of these locations. We truly fell in love with every single one!
